How healthy is your business?

In the process of interviewing 300+ entrepreneurs for his book,  Profit First, Mike Michalowicz found an alarming trend: most business owners are quick to brag about how big their business is rather than if they are profitable or not.

This makes me wonder why it is so hard to focus on success instead of size. As someone who guides others towards a better future and more successful paths, these discussions always seem like wasted energy when we should be focusing on what matters most: profit!

Most of these "successful" entrepreneurs are on the verge of bankruptcy while aspiring to make millions because their businesses grow exponentially without any control or oversight in place that does not involve selling more every day (which just leads back into this endless cycle). These business owners are not making profits; instead, stress becomes an unfortunate side effect from overworking themselves for too many years.

The goal of Profit First is to shift our entire entrepreneurial culture from one of top line success to bottom-line success. And a simple way to get started is to just ask a better question:

How healthy is your business?

Health can only occur when you put profit first. Ask yourself the question enough times and it will become your new focus, and your new reality. Never forget this: Profit First. Always!
