Episode #70 – Unlocking Growth: Hiring Help for Your Law Firm

We're tackling a crucial question today: When should you hire help for your law firm, and how do you know who to hire?

    The Challenge of Growth

Many solo attorneys and small firms hit a revenue ceiling where they're making decent money but not enough to hire additional help. This creates a catch-22 situation: you need more revenue to hire, but you need help to increase revenue.

A 2022 Thomson Reuters Institute survey revealed that 56% of small law firms struggle with spending too much time on administrative tasks and not enough time practicing law. This is where smart hiring comes in.

When to Hire: Recognizing the Signs

Your calendar is overflowing with calls, meetings, depositions, and court appearances. You lack adequate time for casework, client acquisition, and professional development. You may find that your personal commitments are being neglected. And, you're experiencing burnout or high stress levels.

    The Time-Tracking Exercise

To determine when and who to hire, follow this process:

Track everything you do for one week, noting the time spent on each task. For each task, ask yourself:

    1. Do I enjoy doing this?

    2. How much would I have to pay someone else to do this?

    3. Is this billable or non-billable time?

    4. What's the minimum level of experience needed for this task?

I know it’s a drag to track your time. But, here’s the beauty in doing it – at the end of your week, you will have all of the information you need to draft a job ad and job description!

Who to Hire: Matching Tasks to Roles

Use your data to identify tasks you can delegate and to whom.

    • Attorney: Tasks requiring legal expertise or judgment.

    • Paralegal: Legal research, document preparation, case management.

    • Legal Secretary: Scheduling, filing, client communication.

    • In Person or Virtual Assistant: Administrative tasks, email management, basic research.

    Creative Hiring Solutions

Depending on the level of expertise you need, here are some potential sources to hire from:

    • Of Counsel arrangements with other attorneys

    • Semi-retired attorneys

    • Attorneys transitioning from Big Law

    • Experienced paralegals from law firms where their partner is retiring

    • Freelance paralegals or virtual legal assistants

    The Benefits of Hiring

Once you have on boarded your new person, there will be a transition period but within 60-90 days, you will enjoy:

    • Increased revenue through more billable hours

    • Improved work-life balance

    • Focus on high-value tasks and business growth

    • Reduced stress and potential for burnout

    Overcoming Hiring Hesitation

Remember, if nothing changes, then nothing changes. Not taking action can lead to stagnant revenue growth, overwork and burnout. Inadequate staffing to support you will also create the inability to take time off or attend personal events.

Hiring is an investment in your firm's future and your personal well-being.
